Di Benedetto Racing had high hopes coming at Shannonville Motorsport Park, a track they know very well. It was the Nissan Sentra Cup maiden event, featuring race-ready Nissan Sentras and Nissan Micras. During the weekend, the Sentra Cup drivers had the opportunity to race on two track configurations as Shannonville is best known for its multiple possibilities.

Justin’s first day at the track driving the #4 Sentra proved to be a bit challenging; “the pace was good in practice, and we felt we had a great car going into qualifying,” declared the Vaughan native. “During qualifying, the car got a bit loose on the out lap, and I tried pushing it on the second lap, resulting in a spin. Then the rain started, and we lost our chances of putting a good lap in, which set the tone for the rest of the day.”

The #4 Wondr Gaming car came back from the first race with a few scars as it turned out to be a hectic event. “I was starting P11, so there was nowhere for me to go but up the field,” explains Justin. “I ended up getting stuck between a train of cars, and I tried making moves, but some other competitors were playing rough, so, unfortunately, there was a bit of contact with one car. I ended up having nowhere to go on the outside, so I came in contact. I had damage to the front, and the day basically ended right there. We took home some points with P10, hoping Saturday would get better.”

Sunday’s qualifying session went much better, with Di Benedetto claiming P2 behind Gavin Sanders, starting the race on the front row. The plan was for both drivers to work together to pull away from the field, but the first lap of the race got hectic. “The start was pretty good, but I got a little bit of contact in the right rear going into Corner 2, so I lost momentum and Kevin (King) got a run around the outside. He and Gavin managed to pull a gap, so it was a bit of a lonely race, but I had Jesse Lazare coming up towards the end. The red flag came out, and I was hoping for a late restart to be able to fight Gavin and Kevin, but it didn’t happen.”

The race ended on a red flag due to an incident, frustrating many drivers who were hoping to get a chance to fight for a place on the podium. Third place is a very respectable position for Justin Di Benedetto, who takes home hardware and valuable points in the championship. “I want to thank Wondr Gaming, Drone Delivery Canada and all my other partners who joined me on my Sentra Cup venture. I think I have the best looking car on the grid, and I can’t wait to show it off at Circuit Mont-Tremblant in a month,” concluded Justin.

The following Nissan Sentra Cup race will be on July 23-25 at the famed Circuit Mont-Tremblant, a track best known for its thrilling layout and stunning views.
