Top 3 Finish for Justin Di Benedetto at CTMP!
Bowmanville (ON), September 7, 2021 – Di Benedetto Racing celebrated a well-deserved Top 3 finish this past weekend in the penultimate round of the Nissan Sentra Cup at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Di Benedetto Racing's driver Justin Di Benedetto scored a 3rd place in Sunday's race, behind Jesse Lazare and Jesse Webb. "This was an event I was looking forward to for a long time. It feels so great to climb on the podium of my home track," said the Vaughan native. "Our season was not easy, so this podium means a lot to me."
"The car felt decent, we made some adjustments ahead of Saturday’s qualifying but I was only able to set the 6th fastest lap time," explained Justin Di Benedetto, driver of the #4 Wondr Gaming Nissan Sentra. "Mosport is a tricky track to overtake, and we are very dependent on the draft of other cars, so if you are spread out around the track, you are a sitting duck."
Race 1 didn't go Justin's way as there were not many laps done under the green flag. "The pace was good, but most of the race was spent under caution as there were quite a few incidents on the track. We had between 7 to 9 laps of green flag racing." The race finished under a caution flag, with Justin stuck in P8.
With the race being in the morning, the team had a lot of time to prepare for Race 2 the following day. As penalties were allocated to some drivers, Justin started Race 2 from the 4th place on the grid. "There was no car in front of me at the start of the race, so I tried to take advantage of it and slotted behind Gavin Sanders to try and stay with the leaders' pack."
"The car felt good, and I just wanted to play safe and be patient. Some other drivers felt eager to overtake, but I wanted to keep it simple and clean, and come up with a good result." This strategy paid up for Justin as his patience was rewarded at the end of the race. "I had a few good battles with competitors, making moves into Corner 5, which is a tough place to defend and even overtake, but I made it work! The last lap was hectic; two drivers in front made contact resulting in a struggling car for Kevin King with half a lap remaining. His speed was not there, so I tried to set him up around the outside of Turn 8 to compromise his line into Turn 9 and 10. He was forced to take the inside line in Turn 10, which is never a good spot to be. I just made the crossover work and managed to snag P3 at the checkered flag!"
Justin concludes by declaring that, "I was pleased with the overtake and maximizing on other people's mistakes. It was exciting to get third place at home, considering Saturday's race didn't go to plan. The team did a fantastic job of setting up the car. I hope to be back at Mosport next year. It was very special to race in front of my home crowd. If I had to sum up this season, I would say it was a pretty tough one, plagued with mechanical issues. "
